The ‘funny’ idea that reinvented Doordarshan

Prasar Bharti CEO, Shashi Shekhar in a recent interview with IANS revealed that the idea of re-running Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan during the lockdown was being mocked by everyone on his Whatsapp group.

The ‘funny’ idea changed all the records for Doordarshan. Ramayan episodes got 42.6 million tune-ins and 6.9 billion viewing minutes on average, according to Nielsen and the Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC), in the very first week. DD National became the most-watched channel in India during the first week of April. There is a 40,000 percent jump in DD viewership since the re-runs began, making DD India's favorite again.
